The Voice

How do you feel about this war that President Bush believes our country needs to fight? Have you really thought about it?

Are you a peace maker, are you disappointed in America for even thinking of going to war? Or do you support the war and think there is a definite need to fight Saddam Hussein?

If you’ve been watching the nightly national news or picking up newspapers, you’ll see people on different sides of the war – people totally behind it and people totally against it.

But isn’t that so America? Isn’t that what’s so great about our country? We can think what we want. We can be on one side, or we can be on the other. We can make posters and rally for peace, or we can write letters to the editor and state our reasons as to why we think our country needs to go to war.

Last week on Jay Leno, Tim Russert, NBC Washington Bureau chief and moderator of Meet the Press, said that the great thing about America in times like these is that we are allowed to be on different sides and have different views on things such as war. But he said as soon as the United States decides to do something, whether it’s to go to war or not go to war, we should stand fully behind our country and support the decisions made by our leaders.

There are definitely reasons why we shouldn’t go to war, and there are definitely reasons why we should go to war. What do you think? As a college student in Milledgeville, Ga., what are your views on this war? Have you even really thought about it? Or does it not even really affect you? Do you not care?

Last weekend, five million people worldwide participated in anti-war rallies. In New Zealand, tens of thousands of people protested the possible war against Iraq. In Britain, which is our ally in the effort to disarm Iraq, anti-war activists piled into Hyde Park in London to rally. In New York, people against the war protested near the United Nations. The streets of Melbourne, Australia, were packed with protesting war opponents. (Australia has already shipped out 2,000 troops.) About 6,000 people in Tokyo, Japan, showed their opposition to the war with Iraq. People all around the world are voicing their opinions about the possible upcoming war. Are you?

It will affect all of us. This already has affected many people around the world. Even many people in the state of Georgia have been affected by this. Georgia is home to several military bases. Many Georgians have already been deployed. Many husbands and wives have said good-bye to each other. Many children have said good-bye to their parents. Many parents have said good-bye to their children as their sons and daughters head off to serve our country. Think about having to say good-bye to someone you love and having to live without them while they’re in a far away country fighting a war. It’s scary.

Even though millions around the world demonstrated their feelings on the war last weekend, doesn’t it seem like a lot of people aren’t making a big deal about this war? Shouldn’t we be? Isn’t the reason we may have to go to war because Iraq may have warfare that could be extremely detrimental to our country?

War is an awful thing. President Bush has expressed that he would prefer peace over war, but we may have to go to war because our nation could be in serious danger.

Are you for it or against it? Do some research. Watch the news. Learn about what’s going on around the world. Why might this war happen? Do you agree or disagree with what your country is doing? React. Voice your opinion. Care about this issue. Students these days care about such silly, trivial things such as Joe Millionaire, J.Lo and Ben’s love affair, who’s going to be crowned Mr. and Ms. GC&SU. And yeah, these things make life more enjoyable. But we need to care and know about the serious issues, too.
