From another perspective

Times change. Have you taken a look around our campus lately?

You may have noticed the changes taking place. Copper is being added to the roof of Atkinson, which by the way is hideous. Copper changes colors over time, meaning the new roof could be a different color next year. Maybe that shade will clash less with the bricks.

To add to that, Terrell, Wells, Stanford and Adams Halls sit empty now. Last weekend 550 students moved from these halls into Foundation and Parkhurst. As a Bell resident it was rather common to see the residents of Terrell out on the porch. The males typically played Frisbee on front campus. About once a week, the smell of hamburgers and hotdogs drew my attention to a cookout as I walked home to Bell, but no longer. Terrell was deserted, and depending on housing demands next fall, Terrell might be used once again as a residence hall.

I spent my freshman year living in Adams. Rooms 203 and 205 hold some memories, but those memories are about to be demolished. Although the fate my memories have already been determined, I am looking forward to the new building.

Speaking of new buildings, have you seen Foundation and Parkhurst or for that matter Bobcat Village? For the most part these buildings are just beautiful. Foundation and Parkhurst do need columns to match the rest of campus, but the question of the matter is, are these buildings actually better than what we already had? Yes, they are new and have suite bathrooms. The actual rooms are not much bigger, but each roommate has his/her own closet.

Each of the doors to the rooms opens with swipe cards. I like this idea, but it would be nice if everything was accessible with our Bobcat IDs. For example, what if you could swipe your card and get into your residence hall and/or your room. Of course you have to live on campus to benefit from this. Another feature that should be added to our Bobcat IDs is the ability to use your card to pay for printing in the library and computer labs. At Middle Georgia College, the vending machines are accessible by their college IDs. This system works similar to flex dollars. Now I don’t know about you, but all of those features would certainty make my life easier.

These new buildings also feature the same security system as Bobcat Village, complete with panic alarms and keypads. I was rather impressed by the camera outside of Foundation. To my knowledge none of the older residence halls have security cameras located at the entrance. Does this mean someone is actually going to watch who is going to the building and know who is a resident and who is a trespasser? Most of our residents are nice enough to extend the door to the person walking in behind them. They don’t know what all of the residents of that hall look like and might let in a trespasser. Does the person watching the camera (assuming there is a person watching the camera) know? Watch MBC news Friday, Saturday or Sunday at 6 p.m. on Channel 4 and see how far one of our reporters got into Foundation and what the department of housing will do to make these buildings safer.

Buildings may be changing on our campus, but I noticed students seem to be adjusting rather well considering all the new developments. If you have a problem with the changes to our campus, contact one of the administrators. All of their information is located online in the campus directory of the Georgia College & State University’s info page. This is our campus, too.
