Relationship realities…

“Love is in the Air”

With this being the day of love, I thought I would suggest a few Valentine’s Day romance options. Now I understand that we’re college students and money is a concern, but there is no reason why you should break your wallet in order to make today memorable. So here are some choices for your very own customized Valentine’s Day surprise.

(For an interesting take on love turn to Rich’s column, in the Sports section).

“Old school romance”

Get a set of construction paper in colors of red, white and pink. Cut up several hearts of various sizes and scatter them across your room. Try hanging some from the ceiling with invisible tape. Get a copy of your favorite kids movie or cartoon, or just see what the Disney Channel and Cartoon Network are showing. Purchase your favorite kids cereal or get items to make the perfect banana split. Stay in your pajamas and enjoy each other’s company.

“Tropical Paradise”

Get a small room heater to make the room nice and warm. Purchase some sun block and cover the floor in beach towels. Find some great summer music, luau music or sounds of the ocean. Get a beach umbrella or a plain one and set it up next to your towels. Pack a lunch in a cooler full of fresh fruit, smoothies with little umbrellas and finger sandwiches. Finish it off with a slow dance and the exchanging of flower necklaces made from wildflowers that you can get anywhere.

“Little Italy”

Print out various pictures of Italy, including the country’s flag and countryside photos from the internet. Get a copy of either “The Godfather” soundtrack, “Once upon a time in America” soundtrack or various songs inspired by Italy. Get a family sized Stouffer’s Chicken Alfredo found in your grocers’ freezer. Place the pictures up all over your walls. Make a fake passport from construction paper and glitter pens and walk your valentine throughout the room to the various “places” in Italy, for example Naples, Lake Como, Pisa and Rome. Enjoy your candle lit dinner with a great wine and cheese, and that’s amore!

Of course there are some of us who won’t be spending today with a special someone. For those of you who fit this category, I say make it a Blockbuster night. Get together with other singles and veg out over ice cream and chips.

Here are some great romantic movie suggestions:
Ghost
Love Story
High Fidelity
An Affair to Remember
Runaway Bride
The English Patient
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Gone with the Wind
Waiting to Exhale
