GC&SU softball sweeps in season opener
The Georgia College & State University softball team opened their 2003 season with a pair of wins against the Lady Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern University with the 11-1 and 9-1 sweep Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bobcats improved to 2-0.
In game one, senior Kristin Hughes hit a two-run bomb in the first inning along with a three-run homer by junior Joni Frei later in the game to lead the Lady Bobcats in a 11-1 thumping of GSW. Cathy Chandler (1-0), a native of Canton, Georgia, earned the win after tossing six complete innings for GC&SU.
In game two, senior Jennifer Joiner (1-0) picked up her first win of the season after tossing 5 complete innings in the 9-1 win that ended in five innings due to the mercy rule. Sophomore Brook Harrison led the Lady Bobcats with her pinch hitting double with the bases loaded to clear the bases for 3 RBIs.
The Lady Bobcats travel to Greenville, Tennessee today and Saturday for the Tusculum College Tournament. GC&SU will open the tournament against Savannah College today at 4 p.m.
