GC&SU basketball continues to split, men win both

Georgia College & State University split decisions in a Peach Belt doubleheader University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The Bobcats hit 11 out of 12 free throws in the final 1:30 of the game to hold on for the 63-56 win.

The Lady Bobcats, however, dropped their second straight conference game in the 64-50 loss against the Lady Braves.

In the men’s game, the Bobcats (11-8, 8-5 PBC) slowly built a
convincing lead over the Braves (0-21,0-13 PBC) shooting 44.4 percent (12-27) in the first half to go into halftime with the 30-15 advantage. Unwilling to give up, the Braves battled back in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field and going on a 17-2 run at the 8:22 mark to pull within striking distance. The Bobcats, however, secured the win hitting 81 percent (17-21) of their free throws, including 14 out of 17 in the second half.

Daryl Ruffus led GC&SU with 22 points, while Rodney Keener added 11 points. Matthew Hubbard led the Braves with 25 points, while Travis Wallace added a double-double performance with 16 points and 16 rebounds

In the women’s contest, GC&SU (11-10, 5-8 PBC) shot a season low 27.3 percent (18-66) for the game to give UNC Pembroke (6-13, 2-11 PBC) only their second conference win on the season. Snapping a six game losing streak, the Lady Braves shot 43.8 percent (14-32) from the floor in the first half and out-rebounded the Lady Bobcats 27-15 to lead 34-21 at the intermission. GC&SU got as close as ten points in the second half but only improved to 29.4 percent (10-34) from the field and were a dismal 23 percent (7-30) from three point range for the game.

Ebony Orr led the Lady Braves with a double-double performance scoring 28 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Breane Haggard scored 11 points, while Alicia Porter added 10 to lead GC&SU. Lindsey Bloodworth also reached a career high 8 points for the Lady Bobcats.

Feb. 12

GC&SU split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Clayton State University as the Bobcats survived a late second half surge by the Lakers for the 81-67 win, while the Lady Bobcats fell into a three game slide with the 60-51 loss against the Lady Lakers.

In the men’s game, GC&SU (12-8, 9-5 PBC) had the hot shooting hand in the first half, hitting 60 percent (15-25) from the field, including 7 out of 11 (64 percent) from the three point line. During the second half, the Bobcats slowly built a double-digit lead before the Lakers were able to cut the deficit to nine with 2:30 remaining at 73-64. Both teams exchanged baskets until time expired and GC&SU was able to sweep the regular season series from the Lakers. The Bobcats shot a season high 58 percent (29-50) from the field as well as 61 percent (14-23) from three point range.

Senior Rodney Keener led GC&SU with 21 points, including 5 for 5 beyond the arc, while junior Daryl Ruffus added 17 points. Kedrick Larry also contributed a career high 12 points along with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals for a complete night. Jamal Johnson led Clayton State (13-8, 8-6 PBC) with 15 points.

In the women’s game, Clayton State’s Catreia Shaw scored a game high 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Lady Lakers took advantage of a second half GC&SU scoring drought for the 60-51 win to split the regular season series. Despite committing 13 turnovers in the first half, the Lady Bobcats entered halftime tied with the Lady Lakers at 24-all. Returning for the second half, however, the Lady Bobcats hit a wall shooting 24 percent (7-29) from the field and suffering a six minute period without a field goal.

Clayton State (14-6, 9-5 PBC) won the battle on the boards out-rebounding GC&SU 48-31 as the Lady Bobcats only grabbed six offensive rebounds in the game. Along with Shaw, Apryl Brown added her own double-double performance with 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Lady Lakers. Dalana Watson scored 13 points, including 10 in the first half to lead the Lady Bobcats.

GC&SU returns to action at home Saturday against University of South Carolina at Aiken. The Lady Bobcats tip-off the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m.
