GC&SU baseball swept by Tampa, beat WGU

The No. 10 ranked Georgia College & State University baseball team was swept by No. 5 Tampa University Saturday afternoon, 2-1 and 5-4, at Sam Bailey Field. The Bobcats fell to 4-2 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 4-2.
In game one, Tampa was able to score a late tenth inning run to pull out the 2-1 victory. Three scoreless innings passed before Tampa was able to push a run across in the bottom of the fourth that was eventually answered by GC&SU’s Tyler Folsom with his seventh inning homerun to tie the game. Alex Castellvi went 2-4 to lead the Spartans at the plate.
Justin Boza (1-0) earned the win after tossing two complete innings and only allowing one hit for the Spartans. Joel Sayre (0-1) took the loss for the Bobcats after pitching the final 3.1 innings and allowing the winning run in the tenth. Jason Samples went 2-3 with two walks, while Folsom provided the lone RBI and run for the Bobcats.
In the nightcap, a strong first inning quickly lifted Tampa to a 3-0 lead and proved big as the Spartans were able to pull out a 5-4 win in another tight ball game. The Bobcats looked to rally in the fifth with a pair of runs scored off a hit and two Spartan errors, then added another run in the top of the sixth to make the score 5-3. In the seventh, Samples singled and eventually scored on a John Belcher grounder to pull within a run but the Spartans were able to get the last two outs to hold on for the win.
Eric Beattie (2-0) tossed 5.2 innings to pick up his second win of the year, while Carrington Fisk sealed the deal to earn the save after pitching the final 1.1 innings to end the game for Tampa. Jay Henderson (1-1) took the loss after allowing 3 earned runs on two hits in the first inning of the game. Matt Nixon and Tyler Folsom went 1-2 with a run each in the Bobcats losing effort.
The third game was rained out.

The No. 13 ranked GC&SU baseball team snapped a two game slide Wednesday afternoon with a 7-0 shutout of West Georgia University at Cole Field. The Bobcats improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Braves fell to 2-2.
After five innings of shutout baseball for both teams, the Bobcats were able to push a run across in the top of the sixth inning after junior Jose Leger led off with a double and eventually scored on Jamie Langham’s sacrifice fly to right field to take the 1-0 lead. From there the flood gates opened as GC&SU scored six runs in the seventh with one hit and six walks by the Braves pitching staff. The Bobcats held on the remaining two innings for the win.
Junior Chris Lawson (1-0), a native of Adelaide, Australia, earned the win after tossing a complete fifth inning and only giving up one hit for the Bobcats. Jason Ledbetter (0-2) took the loss for the Braves after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing the first run of the game in the top of the sixth. Jason Burgess went 2-4 in the Braves losing effort.
GC&SU is one of six Peach Belt Conference teams ranked in this week’s poll. Kennesaw State University, which has yet to play a game this season, holds on to the No. 1 spot for the third straight week. Francis Marion University, fresh off a three game sweep of North Florida University, enters the poll at No. 15. While University of South Carolina of Aiken drops five spots to No. 19. Armstrong Atlantic State University climbed five places to No. 20, while North Florida dropped twenty places to No. 24.
The Bobcats will open Peach Belt Conference play this Saturday and Sunday at John Kurtz Field against USC Aiken.
