GC&SU moves 550 students over one weekend

Moving your place of residence is hard enough when it involves just you and your roommate but try moving 550 students over one weekend.

It will take a huge amount of coordination to move residents from their present residence halls to their new Centennial area residence halls Feb. 14-16. The housing department is rising to the challenge, but they can’t do it alone. They are asking for the campus community to give them some helping hands.

“In many respects this will be like an old-fashioned ‘barn raising’ when a community would come together and help others to accomplish an important task,” said Paul Jahr, assistant vice president for Student Affairs.

“Volunteers are needed to help students move their belongings to their cars and from their cars to their new rooms, help with traffic control by monitoring loading and unloading zones, monitor traffic up and down stairwells, assist in monitoring parking areas, and provide support and encouragement,” he said.

One of the major challenges will be traffic flow.

“We’ll have to maintain large areas in front of the new buildings for the trucks to unload and maintain areas in the existing buildings at the same time students will be wanting to get out of the front door,” said Jahr.

Professional movers will be available to move boxes and refrigerators that have been defrosted, emptied and bound shut.

“We need folks to help in all areas, not necessarily lifting boxes but to be involved,” said Jennifer Brooker, executive assistant to the vice president for Student Affairs.

Potential volunteers can be anyone who is not one of the 550 students.

“Anyone willing to donate a couple of hours will be a big help,” said Jahr.
“I expect they’ll be a number of parents that will be there as well.”

“This will be a milestone in the history of Georgia College & State
University and its housing program,” he said. “Beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. and continuing until Sunday at 6 p.m. students will be moving into the two new residence halls.”

Students will receive new phone numbers, which will be available right away.

“Prior to move in we will distribute the new phone numbers along with the housing assignments,” said John Stone, associate director for Operations of University Housing.

The housing department is trying to ease the burden of moving. They will accept donations of refreshments to hand out during the move.

“Drop baked goods or two liter drinks by the housing office at Beeson on Friday and we will disseminate them to the buildings during the move,” said Chad Clark, assistant director for Residence Education of University
Housing.

Jahr said volunteers are needed during any of the following time periods: Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Contact Dr. Bruce Harshbarger (bharshba@gcsu.edu) or Ms. Jennifer Brooker, (jbrooker@gcsu.edu) at 445-5169 in the Student Affairs office to sign up.

“The students, their families and the university would appreciate your participation,” said Jahr.
