Rodney ‘Hot Rod’ Keener takes team under wing
In his second season of playing basketball for Georgia College & State University, senior guard Rodney Keener has had many accomplishments.
Keener transferred from Faulkner University in Alabama. He has been a leader for the team both in and out of the stat book.
In his first season for the Bobcats Rodney emerged as the team’s leading scorer in 15 games during the 2001-2002 season, which includes 10 games with twenty-plus points and 24 games in double figures. Keener finished fifth in the conference in points per game, averaging at 18.7.
Keener also showed he was a tremendous threat from the outside, leading the conference in three point shooting, nailing 44.7 percent of his shots from outside the arc.
These feats have not gone unnoticed; Keener has been awarded several honors for his athletic achievements. Not only has he been named as the Peach Belt Conference player of the week three times, Keener also earned First Team All Conference and Second Team All-Region honors last season.
Last year Keener earned PBC Player of the Week honors twice, along with this honor Rodney averaged 19.8 points per game in PBC games. Rodney also led the Bobcats with 57 steals and 22 blocks.
With all the recognition Keener has received, he remains focused and works to make the team his first priority.
“It’s really exciting to see the younger players’ games come together,” said Keener. “Once our team chemistry develops, our record should start to improve.”
Keener said that the Bobcats have a very good shot at winning the conference
“All we have to do is keep improving, and play our best ball,” said Keener. “We will start winning more games. I really feel good about my GC&SU experience, and it means something special to me.”
