Moving into a new date
It will be a ‘suite’ deal when Georgia College & State University student residents make their move to Parkhurst and Foundation halls beginning Valentine’s Day.
The move-in is scheduled for Feb. 14 through 16. Students anticipated moving into the new suite-style dorms in January, but the dates were pushed back in order to complete construction.
“We are doing last minute details in Parkhurst – straightening up the furniture and testing things. The landscaping has started and the sidewalks are being completed between the buildings,” Associate Director for Operations for University Housing John Stone said.
“The carpet has been laid and the furniture delivered. Foundation is not far behind. The furniture is due today (Jan. 21).”
University Housing is trying to work out the details of moving 600 students from Adams, Sanford, Terrell, Wells, some in Napier and some in Bobcat Village.
“Paul (Jahr) likened it to the invasion of Normandy, and I think he’s right,” Stone said. “Housing will provide tape, markers, boxes and movers – the same ones that helped with the apartments. They are licensed and bonded. We will have the availability of trucks and men to help. Five medium-size boxes and one wardrobe-size box will be provided for each student. Students will pack, seal, label and leave them in their room.”
The movers will move all the boxes. Students will be responsible for moving other items such as their computers or refrigerators. Dollies will be available for the students to use.
“This will be a huge move for us. One challenge will be having RA’s located in two places while the move is going on,” Don Baldwin, resident assistant in Sanford, said. “We should have some extra help from the other dorm’s that are not moving – Bell and most of Napier.”
Baldwin said that one thing that will be different for many students and RA’s is that the floors will be co-ed. In the current dorm’s, Adams and Wells are all female, Sanford is male and Terrell houses both men and women.
“There will be two RA’s on each floor – one guy and one girl except for the ground floor as there are not as many suites there,” he said.
Adams Hall residence assistant Sharon Hall will be stationed on the ground floor in Foundation.
“We know it is going to be hard, but everyone is looking forward to the move. The rooms will be bigger,” she said.
“If everything goes as smooth as we’d like, we can move in a couple of hours so that the whole weekend won’t be shot. Hopefully, we will have plenty of help from the other staffers from the two dorm’s not moving which are Bell and Napier B which had an optional move,” she added.
Stone is asking that the whole campus community pitch in and help with the move.
“We will need help with check-in and traffic. There should be refreshments throughout the day. I think students will want to go ahead and get everything moved by the 14th. They will all have to be out of the dorm’s by Sunday. The key codes will be changed after that,” Stone said. “We hope to have some sort of social on Sunday [Feb. 16] at the new suites.”
