Lady Bobcats play longest game in school history

Women

When it was all said and done, Georgia College & State University lost the longest game in the school’s history.

Kennesaw State beat GC&SU Saturday 84-81, after the game took three overtimes to finally have a winner. GC&SU could not convert free throws down the stretch of the game as the Lady Bobcats (9-5, 4-3 PBC) fell to the Lady Owls.

“It was one of those games where it was so awesome and if you were there as a spectator, even if you were pulling for us, you would have walked away from there saying that was something,” said John Carrick, women’s head coach. “The game was like to gun fighters going at one another and reaching back for everything they had, it was a fantastic women’s collegiate basketball. It was just a shame that we lost.”

Kennesaw State’s leading scorer Denisha Ferguson hit two huge free throws with 0.8 seconds left in regulation to force the first overtime. Both teams upheld their classic rivalry, reaching triple overtime, before the Lady Owls were able to build a three point lead and along with missed free throws by the Lady Bobcats secured the win for Kennesaw State.

GC&SU shot 25 percent (1-4) from the free throw line in overtime, while Kennesaw State (10-5, 4-3 PBC) was perfect from the charity stripe hitting all six of their attempts.

Andrea Lee lead the Lady Bobcats with 25 points Breane Haggard’s matched a career high with 22 points, nailing six of 10 beyond the arc. Rachael Jackson added 10 points in her second straight start of the season.

Ferguson led Kennesaw State with a double double, scoring 27 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, while LaTonya Henry added 18 points and 16 rebounds of her own. Malgorzata Morka contributed 16 points to round out the top scorers.

Carrick could only think the loss would end up helping his team in the long run.

“I think it is going to affect us positively. Even through it was a loss, we’ll be disappointed cause we lost but we feel pretty good about ourselves because that was a heck of a game,” said Carrick.

Men

The GC&SU Bobcats suffered a 76-65 loss to the Owls.

“I think the Bobcats have a good chance of winning the Peach Belt,” said Josh White, a junior Biology major. “They are a real good team, but they still have a lot of basketball to left play.”

The Bobcats (7-6, 4-3 PBC) quickly fell behind 8-0 as Kennesaw State (14-3, 6-1 PBC) came out on fire, eventually extending their first half lead to 15 points. GC&SU, however, caught steam late, going on a 21-4 run for a 34-31 halftime advantage.

The Bobcats fell victim to the hot shooting of Terrence Hill who scored 18 of his 25 points in the half to help the Owls maintain their near perfect record in conference play. Kennesaw State shot 65 percent (17-26) from the floor. The Bobcats committed 21 turnovers in the loss.

“Watching the games this year, both of these teams are really good,” said White.

GC&SU’s Daryl Ruffus led the Bobcats with 21 points, while Roosevelt Whitney saw his first career double-double performance with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Along with KSU’s Hill, Reggie McCoy dumped in 18 points while Brandon Moore reached double figures with 12 points.
