Kappa Sigma receives scholarships, awards
Lambda Xi, Georgia College & State University’s chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity has been awarded $2,500 for excellency in leadership and academics.
Kappa Sigma is the oldest fraternity, originating in 1400 in Bologna, Italy. It was brought into the United States in 1869 in Virginia. There are 200 chapters in the U.S. GC&SU has had its chapter for 29 years.
Coy Watkins, Chris Whitley, Ryan McDonald and Chris Snider were selected this year for the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund. Watkins received $1,000 and earned the top level of ritual mastery in Kappa Sigma. Whitley, McDonald and Snider each received $500 in scholarships. In the last four years the Lambda Xi chapter has received $11,250 in awards.
Watkins will be graduating in May with a 3.3 GPA and a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He plans on attending the Medical School of Georgia in Augusta for physician’s assistant training. Watkins has enjoyed his time at GC&SU and as a part of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
“The fraternity has been a brotherhood to me,” said Watkins. “It has given me opportunities to meet new people and has helped me in planning for my future. The connections are unbelievable.”
Craig Henry, chapter advisor, said the scholarships are awarded for a variety of reasons.
“The money is awarded for leadership, grades and campus involvement. Our overall GPA was a 3.0 and we were the top chapter in the southern states and top 10 of 200,” said Henry.
Henry has been chapter advisor for 16 years and works at GC&SU as a Technology Support Specialist. He is a graduate of GC&SU, a mentor and a fellow brother of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
“I enjoy students, challenging them to get the most out of themselves. It enriches my job here, meeting people,” said Henry.
Junior Gary Virden is serving his first semester as president. He looks to continue their efforts in reaching out to the community.
“We are involved in a number of community activities. We are currently working with Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-A-Highway and Relay for Life,” said Virden.
Virden is interested in seeing students make the most of their college experience.
“We try to take the students here at GC&SU and make them better gentlemen and students. We hope to show them how to succeed in life,” said Virden.
Kappa Sigma has won the Founder’s Award of Chapter Excellence (FACE) three of the last five years. Virden has many plans for the upcoming year.
“I would like to see us win the FACE award again and also see a greater turn out for Rush. We were very happy with our 28 this semester. I would really like to see the Greek system increased in general,” said Virden.
Watkins will be graduating in May but still wants to see many things happen here with the Greek system.
“There are many needed improvements within the system. We need a Greek row and also a little help from the community. We would like to see them more involved and supportive,” said Watkins.
Henry is also excited about the year and will continue his position as
chapter advisor.
“We will be looking to continue our leadership on campus and in the community,” said Henry.
