The Voice

College students’ troubles consist of all kinds of things: bad grades or struggling to keep up the good grades, credit card debt, being away from home for the first time, being totally confused about post-graduation plans, not being able to get into grad school, juggling a job and college, breakups and family problems. These can and do lead to stress, anxiety, self-doubt and depression.

And since exams are coming up and college can be downright stressful, The Colonnade staff wants to lend some helpful suggestions and tips to all Georgia College & State University students bogged down with all that’s going on in their lives. There are things on or near campus that can help you, (our readers), out.

First, you should know about Counseling Services in Lanier Hall. It’s always helpful to talk about what’s bothering you with someone. The counselors there can help with issues that college students often deal with such as stress management, time management, grief and loss, self development and conflict resolution. Call 445-5331 or stop by Lanier 122 to make an appointment.

An excellent way to relax and put your troubles to the side would be to visit The Cellar Coffee House under Sanford Hall or Soulshine downtown. Have a soothing cup of coffee and just take a break in your day!

Possibly one of the coolest things on campus to help students relax is the Somatron chair located in the Music Therapy Clinic. Students can bring a tape or CD of their choice or use the wide music selection the clinic has. The Somatron chair vibrates the entire body to the frequency of the music plugged into it. This is the first year the chair is available for everyone’s use. According to Music Therapy student Leticia Alberti, this chair is very effective when it comes to relaxation. Research shows that music therapy reduces heart rate, anxiety and blood pressure. If you’re interested and think you could use some music therapy, call the clinic at 445-2123 and make an appointment with the Somatron chair.

Want to get some frustration out or work up a sweat? Take a trip to the Centennial Center and take an aerobics class. Play a game of racquetball or walk or run around the indoor track. Numerous studies show that exercise is a great way to relieve stress.

Don’t let exams and professors get you all worked up. Take a deep breath and try our suggestions. All are free of charge except that cup of coffee. And good luck with finals.
