GC&SU prepares new residence halls for students

This January students living in the Ramada Inn will be given first preference to staying in the new Bobcat Village Apartments at West Campus, said Paul Jahr, assistant vice President of Student Affairs/Director of University Housing.

The apartments have room to hold around 200 students, mainly sophomores, juniors and seniors. A majority of those 200 students will be those who are currently staying at the Ramada Inn. All those who wish to rent apartments must be at least 21 years old or have completed at least 24 semester hours. “Freshmen at the Ramada may go to the apartments temporarily,” said Jahr, until new residence halls are opened.

There will be four person and two person apartments for rent, with each apartment having private bedrooms. A four person apartment will be $2,550 for the six month lease. A two person apartment will cost $2,700 for the six month term. This is compared with the $2,138 price of a two-person dorm suite and the $1,688 price of a four-person suite for a semester for the new Foundation and Parkhurst Halls. For Bell and Napier Halls, a semi-private room is $1,553 a semester and a private room is $2,138 a semester. Napier Hall, however, is part of the Phase 3 in the University Housing’s plan to demolish the hall. A new hall will be built under the same name, said Jahr. “With a reflecting pool, tennis courts and a clock tower.” Phases 1 and 2 involve the newly residence halls in the Centennial Area, which will be completed the end of Jan., and the tearing down of Adams and Wells halls.

The Bobcat Village Apartments will “rent for a 12 month occupancy,” following a calendar year. Typical dorm occupancy is for a school year. The apartments on West Campus will be available for six months time span starting Jan. 2. Jahr said that though students will be moving into the West Campus apartments on Jan. 2, “we anticipate we’ll be able to take possession of the apartments December 12.”

The time between the buildings’ completion and the opening day will be spent preparing the facilities for the students’ arrival.

“We’re anxiously awaiting the opportunity to open our facilities to the students,” said Jahr.
