From another perspective
`Everyone walks his/her own path of life, but at times, these paths cross, and we meet some wonderful people.
During my past two years at Georgia College & State University, I have had the honor of meeting many of these wonderful people. Each of them have added their own particular ingredient to my life.
Two of these people work for The Colonnade–Joseph Tkacik and Kent Henderson. Joseph (Joe or JT) has a pleasant attitude and a keen sense of laughter. His sense of humor grabs your attention and adds spice to that moment in time. He is an easy going, reliable individual. Kent Henderson started working with The Colonnade this semester. He is not only an organized person, but rather polite. He has excelled as our advertising manager this semester. I have enjoyed working with both of them this past semester.
The members of Gamma Sigma Sigma have also had a significant impact on my path of life. I joined this sorority as a freshman. I was a member of the Eta pledge class. Gamma Sigma Sigma is a national service sorority, and GC&SU’s chapter is co-ed. I have around thirty sisters and one brother, who have become my family. Granted we have had our difficulties, but we are working through them and moving towards unification; however, this sorority has brought some wonderful people into my life especially my big sister, my little sister and my roommate/best friend.
Gamma Sigma Sigma inducted the Kappa Pledge class Saturday, Nov. 16. I am looking forward to getting to know these eight girls better. Each of them will add a new flavor to the organization. Along with these eight girls, we inducted our second honorary member. Dr. Harriett Whipple, professor of biology and advisor of Alpha Delta Pi, was initiated last fall as our first honorary member, and this year we chose Dr. Ginger Carter, associate professor of Mass Communication and advisor of The Colonnade, to receive this honor. She is not only an active individual on campus, but she does a considerable amount of work for Relay for Life and Pie the Professor’s face. She received this honor with tears of joy, and I know she will be an active member in our sorority.
There are several others who have made an impact on my life and contributed to the person I am today; however, I do not have enough space do each of their gifts justice. Each of these people added spice to my life. I grew up as a rather shy person, but the opportunities that I have taken advantage of have help to break me out of my shell. These opportunities include being member of The Colonnade, Gamma Sigma Sigma, The Georgia Education Membership Program and several other organizations. Along with these organizations, I just became a member of the leadership, honor society Omicron Delta Kappa.
This semester I have concentrated on making a difference in each of those organizations and allowing them to completely break my shell, so I can be fully prepared to enter the world of journalism. I have taken on more leadership positions and asserted my knowledge in more cases. I just recently saw “8-mile,” which is about seizing your opportunity. I challenge you to capture your opportunity and make a difference in some else’s life.
