Seventh annual memorial run to honor Will Robinson
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and Milledgeville Junior Woman’s Club are presenting the 7th annual Deputy Will Robinson Memorial Run.
The 5K and one mile fun-run will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002. The run is being held to honor former Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Will Robinson.
“A few years ago, he was shot and killed in the line of duty here in Milledgeville. Will was a student at GMC and Georgia College. He was in his twenties when he was killed,” Lynn Hanson, director Graduate Programs in Business said.
This is Hanson’s first year working with the event, but she feels strongly about the cause.
“I believe this event raises awareness about the importance of supporting our local law enforcement who put their lives at risk to protect the communities they serve. The money raised is used for a scholarship in Will’s name. Proceeds are also used to support the Baldwin County D.A.R.E. program,” Hanson said. “Will’s father is also employed by GC&SU.”
The Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8:30 a.m. The location of the runs will be held at the North Baldwin County Fire Department on Airport Road in Milledgeville. Pre-registration fee is $15 and race day registration is $17. There will be a discount for groups of 10 or more. The age groups for the run range from 10 and under to 60 and over. The awards for the one-mile run include ribbons to all participants and awards to first place male/female runners. The 5K run awards are overall male/female runners, masters male/female runners, top three in each male/female age group, overall public safety, overall male/female Baldwin County runner and a school spirit trophy will be awarded and given to the school with the most participants. A t-shirt will be available for all runners.
Ashley Johnson, participant, encourages people to participate. “People need to join in the race to keep this Memorial Run continuing on for years to come.”
“The Will Robinson Run is a special event that people should come out and participate in,” event promoter Donald Johnson said. “The proceeds that are being taken up are going towards good programs in Milledgeville and will help out the community.”
Proceeds of the event will benefit the Will Robinson Scholarship fund, the Baldwin County D.A.R.E. Program and foster care. All walkers are welcome. For more information please contact Lauren Deen (478) 452-4625, Detective James McCue (478) 445-4893, or Christine Giles (478) 452-7709.
