Fencing Club opens season at GSU

The Georgia College & State University Fencing Club opened the season at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro this past weekend.

The Fencing Club has gained many students who have strong interest in the art of fencing for both men and women.

“This is the first year that we have two incoming freshmen with previous fencing experience,” said Head Fencing Coach Geza Martiny. “In the past 29 years, since the conception of the fencing club, students interested in fencing were all beginners and learned the sport from me.”

This year GSU entered one of the largest fields of fencers for the tournament with 21 men & women. GC&SU could only field three women
fencers.

Each team consisted of three fencers for the team event. Intercollegiate events are only team events. Each individual’s score added to the team’s possible 45 touches to win the event.

There are three weapons to compete with, the foil, the epee, and the sabre. Coach Martiny introduces the foil first to his students.

“Once the students mastered basic in foil, the next weapon to learn is epee,” said Martiny. “The two weapons of foil and epee are similar, trusting weapons, but the target for epee is the entire body, not just the torso like in foil. Sabre is a cutting and trusting weapon. It is the last weapon to be taught.”

GC&SU fencers are well prepared to fence all three weapons while other intercollegiate teams fence the art of foil.

GSU could not field teams in women’s epee and sabre or men’s epee. The two new freshmen with previous experience are foil fencers. They learned the other two weapons well. Martiny is very impressed with new fencer, Ramon Figueroa.

“Ramon has all the excellent personality traits to be a world class fencer,” said Martiny. “He is highly intelligent. He has self motivation, skill and is always focused.

FINAL RESULTS

Men’s Foil

The GC&SU line up of Ramon Figueroa, Gus Armstrong and Steve Smith lost in a close battle to GSU 41 to 45.

Exhibition: GC&SU Gold Team of Tim McElrea, Scott Register and Stephen

Rollyson lost to GSU 21 to 45.

“Stephen Rollyson was the only experienced fencer in this bout,” said Martiny. “Tim and Scott did their best as beginners.”

The Brown Team of GC&SU consisted of Hunter Register, Jacob Crawford and Stephen Rollyson. The team only lost by one touch to GSU 44 to 45.

GSU could not field a team for men’s epee.

Men’s Sabre

GC&SU’s line up of Figueroa, Gus Armstrong and Steve Smith won the event. This was the first time Figueroa fenced in the sabre event. He won all of his individual bouts. GC&SU beat GSU 45-22.

Women’s Foil

GC&SU’s Taylor Yeary is the only returning fencer for the women from last season.

“In this event, with two beginners, it was a chance for a good learning experience,” said Martiny. “In fact Morgan Lueck just joined the team a
few weeks ago.”

The team of Yeary, Lueck and Kauffman won this event 45 to 33. Yearny and Kauffman were both undefeated through out the entire team competition.

GSU could not field a team for women’s epee or sabre.
