Five noteworthy GC&SU softball players recognized by NFCA
Five Georgia College & State University softball players have been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athletes. The NFCA announced the recipients for the 2001-2002 school year earlier this week.
Joni Frei, Michelle Mayne, Rebecca Heinicka, Cathy Chandler and Rebecca Schweitzer received the honor for the Lady Bobcats after each of them earned a 3.5 or better grade point average during the last academic year.
Frei, now a junior, played shortstop and centerfield for the Lady Bobcats last season. She earned All-Peach Belt Conference and Second Team All-Region honors after batting .319 with 14 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 20 RBI last season. She led the team with a school record 46 runs and tied a school record with 31 walks last year.
Heinicka, now a senior, was GC&SU’s starting catcher last year. She played in and started 47 games and will once again see a majority of time behind the plate. She was third on the team with seven doubles and fourth with three home runs.
Mayne, a senior last year, was a four-year pitcher in the program who leaves as the school’s all-time leader in career victories.
Schweitzer, the Lady Bobcat’s first baseman who graduated last spring, was GC&SU’s leading hitter last year. She is currently an assistant coach for the Lady Bobcats.
Chandler begins her fourth season in the GC&SU program after posting a 7-5 record with a 2.35 ERA and three shutouts in 2002. She became the first GC&SU pitcher to toss a perfect game and no-hitter after fanning eight batters while walking none in a 6-0 complete game victory over Georgia Southwestern
All five of these student-athletes were also named to the Peach Belt Presidential Honor Roll last spring.
