Brothers swing together

Golfing is often thought of as an individual sport. The Georgia College & State University Bobcat Golf team consider themselves a family.

For two brothers, that is an automatic given.

Jose (Paulie) Martinez Medrano and Martin Martinez Medrano are two brothers making an impact on the GC&SU golf team.

Jose is in his fourth year with the Bobcats after playing in 12 tournament with one top 20 finish last year. He finished with a 77.59 stroke average
and was named to the Peach Belt Presidential Honor Roll

His best finish was in the 2001 Peach Belt Championships in which he tied for ninth.

Martin is playing in his second season with the Bobcats after playing in two tournaments with one top 20 finish last year. In the two tournaments, he tallied a 74.83 stroke average and was named to the Peach Belt Presidential Honor Roll.

Head Bobcat Golf Coach Jimmy Wilson considers it a great asset to have two high caliber athletes on the team. The fact that they’re brothers made it possible for the team to be even closer.

“Paulie has basically been a big brother to Martin on and off the golf course,” said Wilson. “He’s kept him line, so to speak. I don’t know if their relationship brings anymore or any less camaraderie to the team. They both fit in with the team, and they both get along with everybody.”

As for the brothers themselves, they also think that the team works well as a cohesive family.

“The team is already pretty close,” said Jose. “We’re all good friends.”

At first, Jose played a role in bringing Martin to GC&SU, but ultimately the decision to play for the Bobcats was all Martin’s.

“I wanted him to come here,” said Jose. “It’s a good school and he wanted to come here.”

“He was here, he’s my brother,” said Martin. “He introduced me to the coach and I liked him and I liked it here.”

Martin has been playing golf just as long as Jose who is two years older. But both admit that there is something to learn from each other.

“Martin knows what he has to do,” said Jose. “He has the ability to do everything already.”

Neither one of the brothers would admit that there was some friendly competition in practice or tournaments.

“We help each other on the golf course,” said Martin.

Sometimes it’s the luxury of a coach to see the true nature of two great athletes.

“They’re always out to beat each other,” said Wilson. “But that’s everybody on the golf team. They’ve got a good competitive spirit.”
