‘The Corinthian’ ready for readers

“The Corinthian” is finally here.

Tuesday’s luncheon in Hoke Dining Room was the first chance of picking up the new volume to “The Corinthian.”

“The Corinthian” publishes abstracts, research articles and presentations by Georgia College & State University students and their faculty collaborators,

“We are really excited about the new ones that will be handed out on Tuesday in Hoke dining room. We invited all of the students that published in “The Corinthian,” and several faculty advisors will be there,” said Dr. Robin Harris, director of the office of Experiential Learning and assistant professor in the department of government & sociology. “This is an opportunity that we have at GC&SU that’s really exciting. Just to be able to publish while you’re still an undergraduate can make a very important difference, particulary if you’re trying to go to graduate school.”

“The Corinthian” is the Journal of Student Research at GC&SU, which is sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Graduate School and Research Services.

For the first time, the Student Government Association has put aside $12,500 for students to go to conferences and present research papers to professionals around the country. Along with this, for the first time students receiving money from SGA will be required to submit their paper or abstract into “The Corinthian.”

The Journal of Student Research at GC&SU invites and encourages submissions for “The Corinthian.”

“‘The Corinthian’ serves a purpose of showcasing what students are doing, We have students that are doing excellent work that extends beyond just what they are doing in the classroom,” said Harris. “Most of these papers begin as a project associated with a specific class, but they then take a life of there own.”

If a student wants to get into “The Corinthian,” first the student must get a faculty sponsor and then put aside a great deal of time to edit and prepare the paper.

“Students spend a lot more time working on them, refining them and
bringing them to a level of a real professional paper, so that’s what ‘The Corinthian’ does,” said Harris.

This year ‘The Corinthian”has a student editor, Barbara Monnett, who is a mass communication major.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for a student to be able to put on their resume that they actually edited a journal. We thought it was the best way to provide students with maximum benefit,” said Harris.

If you are interested in submitting a paper to “The Corinthian,” log on to www.gcsu.edu/oel for an application. The deadline for the next volume of “The Corinthian” is April 1, 2003.

“Students are encouraged to submit entries as long as they have a faculty advisor,” said Harris.
