Gwyn’s eye is on the ball
Returning for his third year with the Bobcat’s golf team, senior William “Bubba” Gwyn is a confident yet humble golfer.
Gwyn earned All- Peach Belt Conference honors in 2001. At the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament last year. His four round 297 score helped the Bobcats to a fifth place finish. Last year Gwyn played in 12 tournaments with seven top twenty finishes.
One thing Gwyn likes about playing golf is that it allows him to use his imagination in playing different holes and strokes.
“Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t,” Gwyn said.
This year Gwyn has a stroke average of 75.12 after a total of three
events and eight rounds.
“Bubba is a very intelligent golfer who knows when to play aggressively and when to play conservatively,” Bobcat Head Coach Jimmy Wilson said. “He has all the physical tools to go as far as he desires in golf.”
Georgia College & State University finished eight out of 18 at the 10th Annual Presbyterian College Intercollegiate Golf Tournament. Gwyn came out in the top four with a 160 score and 64 place tie.
“Bubba is a tall fellow with quite a lot of power in his golf swing,” said
Wilson. “Though he is taller than the average golfer, he still possesses the soft hands necessary to have a successful short game.”
Gwyn has played golf for approximately 17 years but received his first clubs when he was two years old.
“My grandmother gave me my first golf clubs for Christmas.” Gwyn said.
Gwyn, a senior majoring in business, is the son of Bill and Daphne Gwyn of Duluth, Ga. He graduated from Duluth High School where he earned All-Region honors twice and All-County four times. When not playing golf, Gwyn likes playing tennis.
After graduation, Gwyn would like to play professional golf.
“As long as he maintains the focus he currently has and continues to work on improving his game, there is no limit to as far as Bubba can go professionally,” Wilson said.
