GC&SU strives to make a difference — day

Georgia College & State University students have several opportunities to participate in “You Can Make A Difference Day,” a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.

In the past, Milledgeville has been recognized by “USA Weekend” for the efforts put forth by the community on Make a Difference Day. Last year over 1700 volunteers completed more than 100 projects. This year’s Kick-Off “You Can Make a Difference Day” will be held Saturday, Oct. 26 at Oak Hill Middle School at 9 a.m. There will be projects going on all day on or near the GC&SU campus.

“We are encouraging students to get involved in at least one of the activities on Saturday, and if they can’t do that, then do something small for a neighbor like raking up the leaves in their yard, or mowing the lawn for an elderly couple down the street,” said Kendall Stiles.

Colleges Against Cancer will be sponsoring Think Pink Breast Cancer Walk and Celebration. This particular event will be held on front campus, registration and set-up will begin at 10 a.m., Opening Ceremony starts at 11 a.m. Closing Ceremonies will start at 1:30 and end at 2 p.m. Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. there will be a survivor’s lap, picnic, silent auction, advocacy spotlight, chain presentation and other activities.

“I believe that this will be a great opportunity to do something for our community and to make a difference in someone’s life. Everyone should get involved, if not with the Breast Cancer Walk, then with something else,” said freshman Christina Harris.

GC&SU’s chapter of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters will be sponsoring the Annual Halloween Carnival from 4 to 6 p.m. on front campus. The Halloween Carnival will consist of an assortment of Halloween activities, candy and different game booths.

“The Halloween Carnival will be a blast, as well as a great way to reach out to the children of our community. Everyone should come out and participate,” said Big Brothers/ Big Sisters member Karen Farmer.

Gamma Sigma Sigma pledge class will be sponsoring a Rock-A-Thon for American Diabetes Association from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Kroger. Dr. Bruce Harshbarger donated two rocking chairs, E. Lorene Flanders donated four chairs and Dr. Richard E. Mercier donated one chair. Puppy Love will be working with the Animal Rescue Foundation throughout the day, and there will also be a few groups working with Habitat for Humanity.

All organizations that are involved in any of the events throughout the day should take lots of pictures and submit them with captions to The G.I.V.E. Center by Wednesday, Nov. 6. If your group needs film, please let Kendall Stiles know so that she can help.

If you need more information, or if you would like to work with an organization call The G.I.V.E. Center at 445-5700 or 445-5936.
