Women impress at tournament
The Georgia College & State University women’s tennis team invited some of the best players in the nation to Milledgeville for the Tenth Annual Fall Women’s Tennis Championships.
The tournament was held at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. The tournament started on Friday Oct. 11 and the final rounds were held on Sunday.
GC&SU’s Caroline Lefevre won the ‘B’ Flight Singles Championship on Sunday.
Lefevre, nicknamed “the Fever” by her team, defeated Armstrong Atlantic State University’s Laura Peaty 6-2;6-1 Sunday to claim the title. Lefevre advanced to the title match after knocking off Armstrong Atlantic State’s Gemma Vaughan 6-1;6-2 in Saturday’s semifinal match.
Armstrong Atlantic State’s Zsofia Golopencza defeated top seeded Tonya Grib from Brenau 6-4;6-1 to capture the ‘A’ Flight Singles Championship in a match-up of two of the nation’s best players.
“It was a very tough field in the top flight,” said Head Bobcat Tennis Coach Steve Barsby. “We had 8 All-Americans in the top flight.”
GC&SU’s Luiza Biktyakova went 1-1 in the ‘A’ singles bracket after falling 6-2;6-4 in the quarterfinals. Bobcat sophomore Annika Persson also went 1-1 in the ‘A’ draw after falling in three sets to Brenau University’s Bilyana Dimovska in the quarterfinals. Freshman Mia Paavilainen went 2-1 after falling to Grib in the quarterfinal round Saturday.
“This was probably the strongest field that the girl will face,” said Barsby. “Only the nationals would have a tougher field.”
In the ‘C’ singles flight, Kremena Vassileva went 1-1 and lost to Kennesaw State University’s Carolyn Ward in the quarterfinal round.
In doubles play, the GC&SU tandem of Paavilainen and Biktyakova was upset 8-5 in the ‘A’ Flight semifinals by Clayton State University’s Nathalia Collantes and Jackeline Nieto. Collantes and Nieto would fall 8-3 to Brenau’s Dimovska and Grib in the championship match.
GC&SU’s Lefevre and Persson also went 1-1 in the ‘A’ bracket after falling 8-2 in the quarterfinals to Dimovska and Grib.
Brenau’s Daniela Covello and Irina Yarikova won the ‘B’ Doubles Championship with an 8-4 victory over Alejandra Aguilar and Gemma Vaughan from Armstrong Atlantic State.
GC&SU freshman Kelly Miller also had a good tournament after reaching the championship match of the ‘C’ Singles Consolation bracket. Miller won three straight matches before falling 6-4;5-7;10-8 to University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s Shannon Gentry.
“We play this tournament and invite these teams because they’re the top teams in the nation,” said Barsby. “We want our girls to face the best players in the nation.”
