Loud and clear

I think that a big part of me is still stuck in the eighties.

The reasons for my saying this is because of something that I noticed about my movie collection the other day. I would say that a good 65 percent of the movies that make up my collection were made in the years of Koosh balls and Transformers.

I don’t know why I like these movies so much. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that a lot of the plots are pretty simple and watching them and enjoying them doesn’t really require too much thought. Don’t let that fool you into thinking that I don’t like ‘thinker’ movies. ‘Thinker’ movies are actually the movies that I prefer to watch. When I want a break from the sometimes-stressful world that we live in today there are many 80′s titles that I can pop in the VCR or DVD player and enjoy.

Another fun thing about the 80′s was the scary movies. I still remember them vividly, nights where I was too scared to fall asleep because I thought that Freddy Krueger was going to get me. Although the scary movies of the 80′s were cheesy.ok, really cheesy, they were still fun to sit down and watch with your friends. The scary movies of today don’t scare as bad as those ones did. Most scary movies today scare you by making you think about how scary something could be if you were there, instead of physically scaring you and making you jump out of your seat. I like the anticipation and suspense that comes before jumping out of my seat.

Most of the 1980′s movies that I find myself watching the most are titles from John Hughes. John Hughes movies basically ruled the 80′s. Some of his movie titles included “The Breakfast Club,” “Sixteen Candles,” and “Ferris Buellers Day Off.” One of the reasons that these movies were so successful was because the story plots tackled in the movies were ones that hadn’t been attempted before. Teen angst was the topic most predominately discussed, and the movies really let you peek inside what a teenager of that era was thinking, and how important it was to fit into society.

1980′s movies will always have a special place in my heart no matter how many people point out the character flaws, or sometimes cheesy story lines. 1980′s movies will always be timeless in their own little way.
