Luminaries and Candlelight Vigil mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is the month dedicated each year to increasing awareness of violence against women.

Each year luminaries are set up on the front campus of Georgia College & State University in recognition of women whose lives have been touched by violence. The GC&SU Annual Candlelight Vigil, held in conjunction with the lighting of luminaries, is a collaborative community/university event. The candlelight program will explore the issue of violence against women through a variety of cultural arts — song, stories, poetry, and music. Women from our local community will speak from their experience, offering their own stories of suffering, healing and hope. Candles are lit in memory of those women who have died because of violence, in celebration of those women who have survived and in commitment to a world free of violence for all.

Folks are encouraged to wear a purple ribbon for the entire month of October in support of eliminating all violence against women. Free purple ribbons will be available at Georgia College through the GIVE Center (445-5936), the Women’s Studies Program (445-5554) and at the vigil on Oct. 15th.

Please plan to attend this community event, and make your own commitment to a world without violence.

Please mark your calendars for this important community event:
