Hispanic community presents aspects of culture to GC&SU
Georgia College &State University students will soon be able to indulge in the ways of Hispanic life, and learn the true characteristics of the Hispanic community through the efforts of Understanding Culture Day.
“We ask that all students stop by the tables and see what is going on,” said Coletha Cox, cultural diversity chair of the Campus Activity Board. “Hopefully we will have more items on display this time than we did last year.”
The event is supposed to be a day that will help better represent the Hispanic Community.
Fabrics, music, dolls, books and videos are just a few of the things that will be on display during this second installment of the event.
“I really want students to learn more about the Hispanic culture and realize that we are the same,” said Cox. “We just have different heritages and values. We need to stop discriminating against cultures that don’t seem to fit the ideal American mold.”
Dr. Ivan Ruiz-Ayala, assistant professor of modern foreign languages, Dr. Jeffery Blick, assistant professor of anthropology, and Dr. Richard Lou, chair of Art Department and professor of art, are some of the
professors that will be helping out with the event. Dr. Blick will be
donating items to the event to be put on display. The Hispanic Interest group and the International Club are also lending a hand with the event activities.
“I am looking forward to having a wonderful day in Hispanic awareness,” said Cox. “I am very excited about the event, and I am looking forward to all students coming out to support.”
Understanding Culture Day will be on front campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have any more questions regarding this event you can contact CAB at (478) 445-3200.
