GC&SU professors share their vocal talents with students

Georgia College & State University students will have an opportunity Monday, Oct. 14 to experience a night of musical entertainment.

Greg Pepetone (pianist), Chris Hendley (vocalist) and Wendy Mullen (vocalist) will perform three works by Robert Schumann, a set of song cycles (stories told through songs) and a third piece by the same composer in the Upcoming Musical and Theater Faculty Recital.

The first song cycle of the evening will be Frauenliebe und leben, or “A Woman’s Love and Life.” This is the story of a tragic love affair, oddly mirroring the events in Schumann’s own life with his future wife Clara. The story is told from the woman’s point of view and is considered an early piece of romantic feminism.

The second song cycle is Dichterliebe, or “A Poets Love.” This work consists of psalms from Heine, a German poet and tells of romance from the male point of view.

The third piece in this night of Schumann works is entitled “Geister (ghost) Variations.” This piece was first published in 1995, having been delayed by Schumann’s wife, Clara. Schumann had spent time in an asylum, suffering from aural hallucinations. The Ghost Variations piece was supposedly dictated to him by whatever voices he was hearing at the time. Schumann died in the asylum in 1856, bringing his short marriage to an end and adding to the sense of tragedy that is already felt in these pieces.

The night will be an interesting display of the talents of some of the music faculty here at GC&SU. The event will be held at the Max Noah Recital hall at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14. Admission is free.
