CAB to plan Homecoming
Homecoming at Georgia College & State University is now going to be organized by a different organization than in past years.
The Student Government Association unanimously passed the resolution Wednesday to allow the Campus Activities Board to undertake all planning and organization of the annual Homecoming.
“We’re excited,” Will Dennison, director of the Campus Activities Board, said. “We have more experience in programming and can make this event more of a tradition.”
In past years Homecoming has been under the direction of the Internal/External Affairs Committee of SGA. The event usually consisted of a basketball game and the Mr. and Ms. GC&SU competition. This year the planning of programming will go to CAB but SGA will still facilitate the elections of Mr. and Ms. GC&SU.
CAB is planning a full week of activities. Some ideas proposed include Battle of the Bands, a bonfire, a parade, a movie and RSO competition.
“CAB has done a really good job in presenting a plan to us.” Senator Roy Henry, chair of Internal/External Affairs said. “I think that SGA needs to focus more on policy and procedures as opposed to programming.”
Another resolution was brought to the floor at the meeting but was tabled after little discussion. The resolution is to prevent smoking at a distance of ten feet from the entrances and/or exits of on-campus buildings.
Several concerns over the issue were where smokers would go in case of bad weather and how would this policy be enforced. Since the vote was tabled to Student Services, the committee will look into the resolution and decide what direction to take from there.
“Some schools have tents which serve as a covered area for smokers” Senator John Wright, chair of Student Services, said. “We also don’t know if 10 feet is a good limit. Some buildings like Arts & Sciences and Parks have entrances where students will still have to walk through the ten feet area to go in.”
Student Services will continue to examine the issue and it will be brought to SGA at a later time.
