Breast cancer awareness week supports local programming
October is breast cancer awareness month.
It is estimated that 203,500 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States in 2002. About 1,500 men will also be diagnosed. This year 39,600 women and 400 men will die from the disease. One out of every nine women will have breast cancer sometime in their lifetime. These statistics are horrifying but Colleges Against Cancer, an organization at Georgia College & State University, is ready to help.
During the week of Oct. 21 through 26, CAC , with the help of other student and community groups, (will be sponsoring) Think Pink Week. During this week, events will be held that will either help educate people about breast cancer or raise money for local programs that support breast cancer patients.
To begin the week, CAC will set-up a table on front campus giving away pink lemonade and educational materials. People will also be able to buy pink links for $1 in memory or in honor of someone who has had breast cancer. These links will be available all week and will form a chain that will be presented on Saturday during closing ceremony of the breast
cancer walk.
On Tuesday, Oct. 22 two events will be held. The first event is an awareness workshop that will answer questions about what breast cancer is, how to prevent it or detect it early, and what happens to those who have cancer. This workshop will be at 5 p.m. in Chappell Hall room 113. Afterwards, a reception for breast cancer survivors will be held at the Cathy-Alumni House.
Everyone is invited to attend the candlelight vigil on Thursday on front campus at 7:30 p.m. This will be a ceremony to honor those who have survived breast cancer and remember those who have been lost.
To celebrate the end of the week there will be a Sock Hop co-sponsored by the Campus Activities Board on Friday night at 9 p.m. in the Maxwell Student Union lounge. All GC&SU students are invited to attend and donations will be taken at the door.
The major event will be the Think Pink Walk & Celebration on Saturday. This will be a major Make A Difference Day project. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and the Opening Ceremony and survivors lap will be at 11 a.m. Throughout the celebration people can walk, participate in awareness activities, eat and get involved in an advocacy campaign.
The closing ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m. and there will be a presentation of gifts and money.
All the money raised from the week will be donated to local programs that support breast cancer patients and education.
