World of Music series draws international talent

Season tickets are available for the 2002-2003 “Our World of Music” series at Georgia College & State University, featuring seven different performances and music spanning from the world of Renaissance lute to cutting edge performance art.

The season will start off Monday Oct. 7 with Christopher Berg, an award winning guitarist. Berg will present the audience with a concert of music for lute and guitar from the 17th century to the present. His performances on both modern instruments and these rarely heard historic instruments are known for their virtuosity and lyricism.

On Tuesday, Oct. 22 the series will kick off its second event with the Goliard Southeastern Music Festival. In its 25th season, Goliard presents chamber music concerts to audiences of all ages across the nation. Led by tenor Jim Blanton, their programs are varied, mixing classical repertoire with premiers of works by emerging composers. The Goliard ensemble has performed in such prestigious venues as the Weill recital hall at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln center, and the Brooklyn Museum.

Cellist Craig Hultgren will take up the third slot in the series on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Hultgren will present a one-man show comprising of contemporary music including the first performance of a composition by GC&SU faculty composer Ross Feller. Hultgren has commissioned more than 50 new works for the cello. Hultgren also performs his spontaneous, free-style improvisations.

On Monday, Dec. 2 George Mann, a pianist and professor at The State University of West Georgia will be enchanting his audience with a wide selection of keyboard works, with a special emphasis on Liszt and Schumann. A special interest of Mann’s is the French repertoire, ranging from the music of Couperin through the works of 20th century composers Satie, Milhaud, and Poulenc.

The first performance of the new year will be presented by The Piedmont Winds on Monday, Feb. 3. Atlanta’s premiere woodwind quintet performs throughout Georgia to rave reviews. The quintet has been together for over 20 years. Its members are all freelance musicians and members of the Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Symphony, and Gwinnett Philharmonic orchestras. Their program includes new and familiar works from the woodwind quintet repertoire.

On Monday, March 10 pianist Andrea Anderson will present a unique recital blending the music of Debussy and Ravel with images of the impressionist paintings that inspired it. A Harold Bauer Award winner, Anderson has performed in China, Sweden, Finland, and Lithuania, in addition to concerts across the United States. Anderson offers an unusual repertoire and has premiered several contemporary works in addition to performing the standard literature.

The seventh and final performance of the series will come on Tuesday, April 1 with the Bass Baritone works of Allen Evans. Evans has been with the National theatre in Mannheim, Germany, since 1987, singing such roles as Don Giovanni, Macbeth, Wotan and Hans Sachs. The Macon, Ga., native completed his American training at the Julliard School and continued work in Europe at the Musikhochschule in Munich and the Salzburg Mozarteum. He has performed in many of the finest opera
houses in Europe, including Berlin, Bonn, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen,
Luxembourg and Stuttgart. GC&SU’s very own Wendy Mullen will join Evans in the performance.

Season tickets for all seven concerts are $36, general admission; $18 for non-GC&SU students, GC&SU faculty and staff. Individual ticket prices are $6, general admission; $3, seniors, non-GC&SU students and GC&SU faculty and staff; and $1, GC&SU students with valid ID. GC&SU students are admitted free to performances co-sponsored by GC&SU Arts Unlimited.
