“Sweet Home Alabama’ delivers a hit
“You can’t ride two horses with one ass…” This line says everything you need to know about Sweet Home Alabama, staring Reese Witherspoon.
Witherspoon plays Melanie, a girl from the Deep South who escapes her unrefined simple country life, to make her way in New York as a fashion designer. Her blossoming career and fresh start are put in danger as her well to do boyfriend proposes. Melanie has a few secrets about her past that a wedding might bring out into the open. The real plot starts to take off with a trip down south to take care of one major loose end, a husband who won’t give her a divorce. Her time down south is taken up by catching up with old friends, attempting to get her long awaited divorce and discovering that she still has some roots planted in the
hometown she fled seven years ago.
From this point on, the movie is fairly predictable. If you saw a single commercial for this movie, the entire plot was revealed. The movie is still entertaining, but there won’t be any huge surprises. Melanie will eventually have to choose between New York, and a sophisticated husband or Alabama and an unrefined, yet down to earth guy. As the movie progresses, it becomes increasingly obvious which choice will finally be made.
There are one or two surprises along the way, plenty of laughs, an enjoyable soundtrack (even if you aren’t fond of country music), and a sweet ending to this film. It’s worth watching if you were a fan of “Legally Blonde”, as you’ll appreciate the comedy that this movie offers. One thing that this film does offer is the lack of any heavy “chick flick” qualities, it surprisingly caters to both sexes. There are plenty of sweet and sappy scenes for the ladies to enjoy, along with the romantic feel of the whole movie. It’s not all “girly” or feminine humor though. Exploding cats, civil war re-creationists, topped off with Reese Witherspoon and her small army of super models should keep the men awake throughout the entire movie. So guys, have no fear, getting dragged to this one by your girlfriend isn’t going to be all that painful.
