Spears and arrows

I got really motivated last week and decided to look on Monster.com for an internship I could do next summer (it is required for my major).

I was checking on my GPA when I noticed a flash of red as I was scrolling down the page. I scrolled back up and noticed the words required under the legislative requirements. I thought I had completed all of the required elements; however, the word required was listed under Ga. History and U.S. History.

I had no idea what I had to do to satisfy the requirements. One of the other editors had the same thing on his web page, so we decided to call the records office. The woman on the phone appeared to be in a hurry and was unable to take the time to properly explain to me the new requirements. Apparently the year I arrived at Georgia College & State University, a requirement was enacted to force students to take either a U.S./Ga. history class or a U.S./Ga. history test. This was honestly the first time I had heard about this.

I was told numerous times to sign up for the Regents test, by teachers and advisors, but had not heard anything about a history test. I asked the woman on the telephone when I had to take the test or class and she replied sometime before I graduated. If I had not taken the time to call, I probably would not know about this test until I completed my application for graduation.

I have already completed my core requirements, which included two world history classes. Now I am being told I might have to take another class that doesn’t count towards completing my bachelor’s degree in mass communication. It would only be wasted class hours. Luckily for me, I ran into a girl that had already taken the test. It is offered once a month, throughout the year, free of charge, at the Kilpatrick testing center.

I have decided to take the test, not the class, because I do not want to waste any more of the hours that HOPE pays for.

The big question on my mind was why wasn’t I told about this before now. Why did I have to seek out information from someone who seemed too busy to give it to me.

This requirement affects all GC&SU students. I think that we have the right to know about something as important as this. It should be discussed in freshman orientations, freshman seminar (at the same time as the Regents test) and by history teachers since it is a history test.

Now that you know, go to Paws, http://paws.gcsu.edu/, and check your GC&SU tranguide like I did. You might find out something else that will affect your graduation.
