SGA improves freshman policy

At the Student Government Association meeting Wednesday, a resolution was passed that affects local residents of Georgia College & State University who are entering as freshmen.

The resolution was brought up after the University Student Council approved a resolution that requires all entering freshmen to live on campus. The goal is that by requiring freshman residency, the public liberal arts mission is enforced. The resolution allows for several exceptions for students who may not benefit from this requirement, such as being married or over the age of 21.

According to the SGA resolution, Student Government recognizes that living on campus is an important and beneficial aspect for all students. The benefits, however, do not always outweigh the additional financial strain imposed upon the families of local students.

The resolution, which passed by a large majority, allows for local students living within a 25-mile radius from the center of campus to be allowed to live with an adult family member who is acting in a guardianship role and who are considered to have a financial strain placed on them.

“The resolution has an implied time limit,” Senator Roy Henry said about the resolution. “This exception for local students will exist until a funding source to help has been created.”

A committee established by SGA and made up of students, faculty and administration will determine the consideration of financial strain to protect those who can’t afford campus housing.

During the SGA meeting, two other resolutions were passed affecting the set-up of University Students Council. USC is a group of representatives from recognized student organizations who meet to
discuss policies that affect their groups on campus. The resolutions
passed approved USC to be an ad-hoc committee of SGA and the by-laws for the committee.

“USC is not an RSO and cannot have a constitution,” Henry said. “They are an ad-hoc committee and can recommend resolutions to SGA but the resolutions must be approved by SGA. SGA makes the rules not the body themselves.”

More information and updates about the status of these resolutions will be given in the next issue.
