“Paws to think” day falls on Tuesday

PAWS to Think Day is not a holiday, but a “day without instruction,” said Dr. Anne Gormly, vice president & dean of facilities for academic affairs at Georgia College & State University.

According to Gormly, Tuesday, Oct. 8, will be a class-free day, scheduled to ease the burden that looms around midterms.

Known at many other colleges and universities as a “pacing day,” PAWS to Think Day is intended to help students “catch a breath,” said Gormly, adding that the one-day break is a permanent feature in many private school calendars.

Even though many students are pleased to have the break, there has been some confusion about why the break was scheduled on Tuesday.

“I think that it is absurd for Georgia College to take away our fall break and make it a Tuesday instead,” said Lucia Smith.

Gormly explained that PAWS to Think Day was scheduled on Tuesday, not to create an extended weekend, but to balance the number of required in-class minutes that must be scheduled to satisfy credit hours.

“If you look across the semester, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were heavy hit with holidays,” said Gormly. “Tuesdays were shortchanged.”

Still, other students are pleased to have a break, no matter what day of the week it falls.

“I’ll ‘PAWS to think’ any day,” said Brian Samples, a senior international business major.

Gormly advises all students to “Use (the break) well and catch a breath, because the best is yet to come — finals.”
