Kappa Sigma receives high honors
The Lambda-Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma at Georgia College & State University received top honors this summer.
Lambda-Xi traveled to Greenville, S.C. to attend the Area II Leadership Conference this summer. Lambda-Xi was represented by Phillip Bell, Chad Folsom, Craig Henry, Rob Hutchinson, Ryan McDonald, Nick O’Neal, Tate Parker, Charles Preston, Chris Snider, Nick Stephens, David Smith, Gary Virden, Coy Watkins and Chris Whitley. The brothers attended workshops to develop leadership skills and to educate the chapter on risk and liability.
“The Leadership Conference is held once a year in which we compete with all the schools around the Southeast,” Charles Preston said. “We were one of the 11 Kappa Sigma Chapters from Georgia.”
The highlight of the weekend was the awards ceremony where the Lambda-Xi chapter was recognized as the most decorated chapter in
Kappa Sigma this year among 210 chapters.
“We are proud to win this award since we are small competing against many larger chapters,” Preston said.
Lambda-Xi was also recognized with awards for outstanding scholarship for Fall and Spring 2001. Their GPA was above all men’s GPA for the entire school year.
“We had a GPA of 3.05, which is very good because this is the first time that a fraternity on campus has had above a 3.0,” Preston said.
Other awards for the fraternity included membership recruitment, membership development, ritual proficiency, community service and intramural sports. Lambda-Xi was also honored as a 2001-2002 Pacesetter Chapter for undergraduate and alumni support. Phillip Bell was named outstanding commissioner and Joe Pupek as outstanding first year volunteer.
The top award at the conference was the Founder’s Award of Chapter Excellence (FACE), which recognized the top overall chapters. Lambda-Xi has received the FACE award three of the last five years.
“We realized about five or six years ago that in order for us to excel we needed to not just focus on goals on campus but also nationally,” Preston said. “We feel like we are one of the better organizations on campus for
being able to achieve this.”
