Exciting restaurants coming to the ‘ville
Downtown Milledgeville is about to get a lot more exciting with the scheduled openings of two new restaurants, Locos and Mellow Mushroom.
Locos and Mellow Mushroom are both chain restaurants that are sporadically located all over the state of Georgia. Each establishment has a tie with Milledgeville, being that each owner graduated from colleges in the area.
“I’m originally from Milledgeville,” said Randy Roberson, owner and operator of the new Milledgeville Mellow Mushroom. “I graduated from GC&SU. This was one of the factors that made me decide to bring one into the area.there is a great atmosphere there.”
Roberson plans on constructing a Mellow Mushroom store like no-other in the state.
“The finished product will be made up of three stories. The first floor [basement] will be used for storage. The second floor will be the ground floor that everyone will enter on. Here there will be the main eating area,” said Roberson. “I have a lot of ideas in my head about what to use the third floor for, but right now I am planning on using it as an area that can be rented out to fraternities, sororities, or other organizations, so that they could use it to have social events.”
The construction plans that Roberson has been looking into will bring the
store back closer to its original look.
“They are going to convert the building back to having the original corner entranceway,” said Heather Holder, director of Mainstreet Milledgeville. “In the end the building will look a lot better than it does now, it will be a nice addition to the downtown atmosphere.”
Although the plans for the restaurant are still in the very early stages of development Roberson has some very high hopes for the store in the downtown area, as it will provide another place for students to socialize. The addition of the new Mellow Mushroom will also open up new job opportunities.
“The store is going to provide a fun place to work. Workers that I have talked with love the job and seem to make great money,” said Roberson.
“We plan on being very involved with the colleges that are around us.”
Locos, the other restaurant coming to the downtown area, is also looking to do exciting things for the community. Locos Deli and Pub will be located in the same store space that Camerons currently occupies.
“One thing that students will be excited about is that Locos is going to deliver to the College,” said Holder.
Locos originated in Athens, Ga., in 1987 when two friends named James O. Loftin and Hughes W. Lowrance decided that the that the town needed a new restaurant that served a high quality but reasonable priced sandwich. On March 28, 1988, the two opened the doors of the first Locos Deli and Pub and never looked back.
After one year of being open Loftin and Lowrance decided to expand their effort by opening an additional location on the eastside of Athens.
This second location proved that Locos wasn’t just a college student novelty being that many of its patrons were local residents, although this was still a favorite student hangout.
The Locos menu will consist of deli sandwiches, appetizers, salads, grilled items and meatless options.
Both of these restaurants should be a great addition to the downtown area, bringing more options and variety to what is already there.
