Shelor comes back with wordly knowledge

Ed Shelor has spent nearly a quarter-century traveling around the world serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, and now he’s back at his alma mater.

Shelor is the new associate director of admissions at Georgia College & State University. Shelor said it was some time off from the military that encouraged him to enroll at GC&SU.

“Back in 1987-88, I took a sabbatical from the Marine Corps and came to GC&SU full time,” Shelor said. “I checked 13 different schools, and
after all was said and done, (GC&SU) was the right place to go. Now that I’m retired from the Marine Corps, I came back to Milledgeville, and decided I would like to work at my old alma mater.”

Prior to arriving at GC&SU, Shelor served as the director of evening classes at Georgia Military College. He retired from the Marines in 2000 after nearly 24 years of service. His tenure included stops in India, Thailand, Kashmir, Korea, Singapore and Hawaii. Shelor also speaks fluent Korean.

Shelor said he believes that his time in the Marine Corps, combined with his degree at GC&SU, helped prepare him for his current job as an associate director of Admissions Department.

“One of the good things that happened (during his tour of duty in the Marine Corps), was going to Georgia College and getting my degree, which made me competitive for promotion within the officer’s ranks,” he said. “The mission of the Marine Corps is to be on the edge of the empire, so you don’t have any Marines in Milledgeville, but you have a lot on the borders, and that’s what we were.”

So far, Shelor has enjoyed being back. Shelor received a BBA degree in Management from GC&SU and a master’s degree in Public Administration at Troy State University.

“The school has a very high quality of faculty,” Shelor said. “The facilities, the campus, is beautiful. You look at the old buildings, the columns, and so much of it is nice. You’ve got a very good student body here. I’m honored to be allowed to work here. This is a great group of people to work with as far as the students and who we work for.”

Shelor believes that providing a quality product for students is his most important job at GC&SU.

“What I need to be concentrating on is providing good student-oriented services, because a lot of people’s first contact with GC&SU is through this office, whether it’s through a phone call, or a request for a mailout,” Shelor said. “Those are the things we have to pay very good attention to. Our job is to provide as good a student service as possible.”
