Sam Wang photo exhibit ending Friday

An exhibition featuring the photography work of Sam Wang was held from Aug. 19 through Sept. 20 at Blackbridge hall.

“Sam’s main focal point in his photography is landscape,” said Richard Lou, art department chair and professor. “He also tries to capture the poetic interaction between mankind and natural landscape.”

Sam Wang was born in China and grew up in Hong Kong. He received a master’s of fine arts degree with a concentration in photography and a minor in painting in 1966 from the University of Iowa. He then teamed up with the art faculty in the School of Architecture at Clemson University, one of the first universities in the South to offer photography as fine art.

“Sam Wang was my professor at Clemson when I was in graduate school. He is a regionally and nationally recognized landscape photographer, said Lou “His work is published in a lot of photography books. He is very well known in the industry.”

The images featured in the larger Blackbridge gallery were all round.

“He sees round as a natural form of conventional composition,” said Lou. “The circles prove that artist is aware of the photographic process. The square or rectangle format is an arbitrary format , the circle makes it a more true form of photography.”

Wang currently teaches photography and “art with computer” at Clemson, and participates in overseeing the new master’s of fine arts in digital production arts program, preparing students for the film animation industry. Two years ago ,Wang was awarded the title of Alumni Distinguished Professor of Art by Clemson University in recognition of his teaching and research. His work is in numerous collections across the country.

“His founding of the photography program at Clemson intrigues me,” said Lou. “Most professors are able to plug their lessons into a program that already exists, that makes things a lot easier. Wang was able to create his own program and then build up, not too many people can do that.”

The exhibit was co-sponsored by the GC&SU Department of Art and Arts Unlimited.
