Loushine shatters 6K record; Bobcats place well in meet

Sophomore Bethany Loushine shattered the Georgia College & State University record with a time of 25:33 in the women’s 6K race at the Alabama-Huntsville/Serra Toyota Decatur Division II South Pre-Regional Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. The Bobcats finished 14th in the twenty-one team field with 336 points. The GC&SU men’s team finished 13th out of 18 teams with 356 points in the 10K event.

In the women’s race, Loushine finished 42nd overall and broke her own record, which she set last year at the Berry Invitational, by more than a minute. Kennesaw State All-American Marjo Venalainen crossed the line first in a time of 21:51 to help the Owls win the meet with 18 points. Alabama-Huntsville was second with 77 points, while Carson Newman was third with 103 points.

GC&SU’s Mandy Alliston ran the third fastest time in school history at 26:41 to finish 63rd overall. Meghan Spall also put her name in the school top ten with a time of 27:05 to finish 68th. Kelly Sowers finished 77th with a time of 28:01, while Kelley Fleischmann rounded out the top five for the Bobcats in 86th place with a time of 28:54.

In the men’s 10K, GC&SU’s J.R. Black ran the fourth fastest time in school history with a time of 36:02 to finish 44th, while teammate Morgan Stallings was right on his heels with a time of 36:08 for 47th place overall and the fifth fastest time on the Bobcat record books. Kennesaw State University completed the sweep and won with 23 points led by Joseph Mutai’s first place finish with a time of 31:52. Florida Southern was a distant second with 98 points.

GC&SU’s Will Hill finished 82nd overall with a time of 39:27, while Jeff Raymond crossed the line at 41:02 to finish 88th. Nate Mwane was GC&SU’s fifth finisher in 95th place with a time of 41:56.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Pre-Conference Meet hosted by Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C.
