Funke wins Cancer Control award
Dr. Barbara Funke , professor of Health Education in the School of Health Sciences at Georgia College & State University, received the American Cancer Society’s Region I Southeast Division “Cancer Control at Relay for Life Award.”
At the Cancer Control Leadership Institute for the Southeast Division of the American Cancer Society Aug. 17, Funke was recognized for her “Smart Shop” activities involving GC&SU students at Baldwin County’s past three annual Relay for Life.
“Dr. Funke has been the chairman of (the) Cancer Smart Shop, the educational component of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life for three years and the force behind educating Baldwin County citizens on cancer related illnesses,” said Sam L. Evans, cancer control manager southeast Division.
Through the Cancer Control committee, Funke helped to educate the public about cancer related issues including the national Prostate Health Month and Breast Health Month.
The nominee for the American Cancer Society’s award must meet the following criteria: conduct Cancer Control activities at Relay for Life that meet all of the national Relay for Life standards; conduct Cancer Control activities with a three member committee; conduct at least four Cancer Control activities at Relay for Life showing mission or goals and keep expenses to a minimum.
“My community service activities center around three issues: HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, cancer awareness and prevention, and alcohol, tobacco and other drugs prevention for youth,” said Funke.
She encouraged GC&SU students’ involvement in service activities to provide professional development to help instill a sense of commitment and engagement with the community.
“I know of nothing I would take in place of Dr. Barbara Funke Baldwin County and the American Cancer Society are proud to have her on our team.” said Evans.
