Take your animal for a walk to raise money for ARF

Pet lovers, unite! The Animal Rescue Foundation’s 6th annual “Walk for Animals, Past and Present” will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Ball Field, Central Park on Hancock Street.

During the walk, participants can walk with their dogs, walk with a photograph of their cats, birds, hamsters, horses or other pets, walk with a toy belonging to their pets, or walk with a photograph in memory of their pets. They can also call the Animal Rescue Foundation, or ARF, to “borrow” a dog.

To have your dog in the walk, you must have $10 for the walking fee or pledge a minimum of $10. The money, your healthy dog and pooper-scooper bags should be brought to the walk site beginning at 8:30 a.m. for registration. The walk begins at 9:00 a.m. All dogs must be on a leash and must have proof of a valid rabies vaccination. The walk will be totaling in one mile around the park.

All the money raised from the walk will go to the ARF shelter expenses.

“Last year, the walk raised nine thousand dollars,” said Bonnie Thompson, president of ARF. The foundation hopes to exceed that amount this year. Their goal for this walk is 10 thousand dollars.

This year, there will be face painting, balloons, craft vendors with their wares on display and ARF tee shirts and polo shirts for sale. All walk participants will receive a free tee shirt.

ARF will also be holding a raffle, with the day of the pet walk being the last day to enter. A “framed print, ‘Partners,’ featuring a rescue dog and firefighter” is the raffle prize, said Thompson.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) will be offering a Canine Good Citizen test. Due to a limited class size of 30 participants, pre-registration is required. The test will require the dog to follow guidelines such as “accepting a friendly stranger” and “supervised separation.”

The $5 entry fee and registration form are due by Wednesday, Sept. 18. A $5 additional fee will be required when your test results are submitted. Forms and more information on the test can be found on the AKC’s website, www.AKC.org. Pre-registration forms should be mailed to Animal Rescue Foundation, P.O. Box 1032, Milledgeville, GA 31061. Other activities during the day include an agility course, a disaster preparation seminar and a blessing of the animals by Father Chuck Robertson from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Forms and additional information for the Animal Walk can be found at the Foundation’s website, www.animalrescuefoundation.org. The shelter can also be reached at 454-1273.
