Kinesiology describes Dr. Ishee
Kinesiology. This is a word that, unless you are part of the health science field (or possibly just an English major), you have probably not heard before. Dr. Jimmy Ishee, the new dean of health sciences at Georgia College & State University, knows all about it though.
“Kinesiology is a term that many people use today to encompass physical education and any aspect of sport and exercise physiology, from a scientific point, with regard to the profession. Physical education. That term itself has often been limited to teachers of physical education. Kinesiology is a generic term that tries to encompass all of those disciplines,” Ishee said, while explaining to me in a round about way that physical education is more than just gym class.
Ishee has a wife and two sons. His wife, Carolyn, will be working here at GC&SU, his son Jacob (23) is working in Conway Arkansas, and his other son, Slay (19) is attending school. Dr. Ishee came to GC&SU from the University of Central Arkansas, in Conway, Ark. While working there, he taught in the department of kinesiology for about seven years before becoming the associate dean. Working at Milledgeville provided our new dean of health sciences the chance to become more involved with his department of interest. This opportunity, the liberal approach that
GC&SU offers, as well as the faculty, prompted his move to our school.
As Dean of Health Sciences, Ishee is responsible for programs in nursing, health, physical education, recreation and music therapy. His former background in the field of kinesiology was that of tests and measurements. This is simply the physical evaluation of a person.
“Well, I’m new, and so we’re looking at where we want to go. But I think the goals of any school, with regards of what it wants to be, is to provide the finest education that we can for individuals in the health sciences.
“We want to allow those individuals to go out and represent us very well, to be a part of the community, and to hold a close tie to our alumni,” Ishee said.
Our new Dean of Health Sciences is a cooperative and friendly individual. He is optimistic about his career here at GC&SU, and while he is still getting used to his new environment. He has high opinions about the faculty and students. Those in the field of Health Sciences will be well taken care of.
