Dr. Jones new enrollment VP
As a new member of Georgia College and State University staff, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Services Dr. Paul Jones intends to build strong leaders with his knowledge of public and private colleges and universities.
“Having worked in public and private intuitions, I think I bring sound leadership skills along with knowledge and experience from several years in higher educaiton,” Jones said. “I want to help to continue to build good leaders.”
Dr. Jones replaces Larry Peevy, who retired earlier this year. Dr. Jones comes to us from Colorado where he spent eight years at Mesa State College. Dr. Jones is a family-oriented man, who is proud of where he has been. The first decorative objects to grace his office here were a picture of his kids and a clock given to him by his former institution. He grew up in a large family, and with his twin sister, was the youngest of 10 children. All the kids were involved in athletics. He then stated that he enjoys the tranquility of golf. The “hobby” dearest to his heart, however, is his family.
As a child, he aspired to a career in sports. He said he “saw that as a goal, being able to play sports.”
Over the course of his college career, he began to sense a bigger world. He became involved in clubs and extracurricular activities outside of sports. It was then that he saw that he could be fortunate enough to go beyond a career in sports.
He worked as a free agent for the Dallas Cowboys. However, he realized he could work outside of the world of sports, so he walked out of camp never to return. He refers to the decision as “the biggest turning point” in his life.
“Someone above had a bigger plan for me,” Jones said.
Recently, Jones arrived in Milledgeville. He saw this opportunity as “a greater cultural experience” for both himself and his family. So far, he has been impressed with our college and city. He likes being in a small town, but he said he’s still “getting used to traveling to Macon for some things.”
As Associate Vice President for Enrollment Services, Dr. Jones reports directly to President DePaolo. He oversees Admissions, Records, Financial Aid and Career Services. Two of his goals are to hold onto currently enrolled students and to see those students through to graduation. He said that he is now at the learning stage, and as he “begins to understand the culture,” he will be able to bring about positive change to the university.
“I can’t imagine doing something different,” Jones said. “I have a real passion for this.”
With that passion as an asset, Dr. Jones feels prepared to maintain his goals.
