Bobcats prepare for meet in Alabama
The Georgia College & State University Cross Country Team are preparing for their second meet of the season.
The Bobcats ran a difficult mountain course for their first meet. The meet was also 50 percent longer for both teams. Tomorrow, the Bobcats will be running at the University of Alabama at Huntsville in Huntsville, Al.
“We ran a long race,” said cross country Head Coach Joseph Samprone. “That was so we could get rid of the cobwebs from a very long summer
vacation.”
The course at Huntsville will also be longer than the normal meets, but the Bobcats will be facing some of their conference rivals.
“This meet is a little more than a mile shorter,” said senior cross country runner Will Cleghorn. “It [the meet] will showcase other teams from our conference and region.”
Some of the other teams competing in the meet are GC&SU rivals Kennesaw State University, Clayton State University, and North Florida University. The main meet for the conference is the Peach Belt Conference Championships. The NCAA Division II Regionals is also the place for GC&SU runners to display their skills.
The conference and region championships have recently been a showcase for GC&SU runners. In the past two years runners J.R.Black, Bethany Loushine, and Morgan Stallings (who set the all-time GC&SU record for an 8k run with a time of 27:38) have set top ten times in both meets.
“This meet should pose a better chance for our team to place in the top five,” said Cleghorn. “Our Team is very optimistic and is ready to make a statement against some of our conference teams.”
The long course will hopefully showcase the talented teams of GC&SU, cross country athletes and provide a challenging run for all runners.
