Amnesty international here at GC&SU

Amnesty International is a worldwide voluntary movement that works to prevent some of the gravest violations by governments of people’s fundamental human rights.

Come to the organizational meeting Sept. 18, 7 p.m., the meeting will take place in Arts & Sciences room 2-56.

For more information contact Amy Feltz at 445-0349 or email slipkid19@hotmail.com.

The main focus of its campaigning is to
- Free all prisoners of conscience (women, men, and children detained for their beliefs, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, etc., who have neither used nor advocated violence.
- Ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners.
- End torture, executions, and other forms of cruel and unusual punishment.
- End extra-judicial executions and “disappearances.”

Amnesty also opposes abuses by opposition groups hostage–taking, torture and killings of prisoners and other arbitrary killings.

Amnesty, recognizing that human rights are indivisible and
interdependent, works to promote all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards, through human rights education programs and campaigning for ratification of human rights treaties.

It is concerned solely with the protection of human rights involved in each case, regardless of the ideology of the government, opposition forces or the beliefs of the individual.

Amnesty does not grade countries according to their record on human rights; instead of attempting comparisons it concentrates on trying to end the specific violations of human rights in each case.

Amnesty has more than 1.2 million members worldwide in more than 150 countries and territories. To ensure impartiality, each group works on cases and campaigns in countries other than its own, selected for
geographical and political diversity.
