SEMAU needs representatives

Georgia College & State University is currently looking for student delegate’s interested in taking part in this year’s South East Model of the African Union (SEMAU) which represents the African nation of Ghana.

The University System Africa Council, with the sponsorship of the Board of Regents, stages a Model (mock) Assembly of the annual meeting which Heads the State of the African Union (formerly Organization of Africa Unity). Each university or college in the system is expected to send a delegation of students interested in Africa to represent an African country. In preparation for this, the students do research on the selected
African country in order to represent that country and present its policies and attitudes adequately at the model assembly.

The South East Model of the African Union (SEMAU) will meet November 9th – 11th in Decatur, Georgia at the Holiday Inn. The host school this year will be Georgia Perimeter College.

“Five students indicated interest in joining the GC&SU delegation, and representing Ghana at the weekly International Club meeting,” said Dr. Dwight Call, Assistant Vice President for International Relations at GC&SU. “The International Club meets on Wednesday nights.”

According to an email from Dr. Palmer, students from GC&SU who have attended SEMAU in the past have found it an exhilarating educational experience.

“The United States of America is playing, and will continue to play, a leading role in the world, it is important that her citizens should be well informed about world affairs,” said Dr. Eustace Palmer, faculty adviser for the African Union.

“Students that participate in SEMAU will act, speak, and deliberate as through they were citizens of the chosen country,” said Palmer. The students will do research about the country of Ghana to help with their preparation for the assembly.

This level of information is particularly essential in university graduates who will inevitably form the core of enlightened opinion and be in a position to influence and shape public policy in the future. Dr. Palmer stated.

Any student interested in participating in the SEMAU can contact Dr. Palmer at 452-5557 or by email at epalmer@mail.gcsu.edu. Dr. Call can be reaced at 452-4789 or dwither@mail.gcsu.edu.

“Participation in the SEMAU is very much in accordance with the University’s and the Board of Regents’ policy of promoting internationalism and multiculturalism,” said Palmer.

Countries that GC&SU has represented in the past include Cameroon, Kenya, and Nigeria.
