Library website leads students to resources

Georgia College & State University students surfing the web for information may just find some of the best resources available right under their noses. The Russell Library site is one of the most resourceful and continuously updated web pages on campus, and according to the talk of several university library faculty the best is yet to come.

University Librarian Bill Richards said students can find “a wealth of help” on the library’s web page.

“We really consider the library web page as an extension of the library,” he said. “The web page is our way of reaching out to the students. There is real content on our web site.”

According to Associate Director for Instruction and Reference Services Lorene Flanders, some of the new site features may be quite helpful for students.

“One of the new things we have is a journal locator,” said Flanders.

The journal locator helps to keep and periodically update a list of resources like print, microfilm and online holdings that may be useful for students.

Coordinator of Programming and Promotions Kim Barker is also confident about the site’s potential. She said every aspect of the web site gets used.

The site has subject and course guides for several majors including art, business and economics, criminal justice, education, English, history, music and theatre, newspapers on the web, nursing and health, outdoor education and psychology.

Students currently enrolled in English 1101 can use the site to prepare for the Library Research Methods Unit.

Another interesting aspect of the site is a web cam that shows construction of the new library in real time. Richards said students can go online any time and see what is going on with the construction. They can learn about the new features that will be in the new building and check on how the progress is going.

Students can also check and see what employment positions may be open at the library.

The Galileo Library Catalog may be helpful to students looking for particular resources. Students simply type in the name the particular book they may be looking for. The site then searches for it and lets the user know if the library has the particular resource, if it is available and where it may be found.

Students may also find guides for how to use MLA and APA style, and they may also apply for an interlibrary loan online.
Richards said the site is routinely updated and is an “ongoing and very dynamic tool.”

“As with most web pages, it’s kind of a work in progress,” said Richards, who noted that the site has undergone a number of changes. Richards said the site is easy to change and maintain.
Some changes may be coming soon for the site. Barker said if changes do indeed occur, attempts may be made to make the very informational site more flashy and interesting for students to visit.

However, for now students already have an exceptional site to consult when looking for resources in a number of areas. The site can be reached at http://library.gcsu.edu/.
