From the cheap seats

I’m so happy to see baseball on television again. I know that they didn’t go on strike, but ever since the strike date was announced I swore off baseball. I didn’t even watch the highlights. For a diehard baseball (and Braves) fan it was a like torture. They didn’t strike and I’m so happy, but at the same time a little disappointed because I had this awesome editorial planned for if they did strike. But I guess that editorial will have to wait till 2007, when the contract between the players and owners is up.

This year in baseball could end up being just as exiting as last year. Of course last year’s main stories were the phenomenal year of Barry Bonds, the unbelievable season of the Seattle Mariners, and an incredible World Series that finally saw the Yankees dethroned in an exiting seven game series. Now there are so many great stories developing this year. Right now the Oakland A’s have compiled an amazing streak of 19 wins in a row (it could be 21 by the time this paper comes out).

The Braves put together the longest streak of not being beaten in a series (I was there at the game when the streak was snapped). John Smoltz and Eric Gagne are closing in (no pun intended) on the all-time saves record of 56.

Finally, the Mets just broke a record. They broke a record held by the Boston Braves in 1911.

The Mets lost their 15th straight game at home on Tuesday snapping the 1911 Braves’ mark of 14 (sorry Ryan, but hey the Mets finally beat the Braves at something).

This week was supposed to be the premiere of the newest feature in the sports page, the ‘Hot Box.’ The ‘Hot Box’ will be a little box that will contain tid-bits of information about Georgia College & State University sports history and little known facts about former GC&SU athletes or just about anything I can find that I think is interesting. If you know of a little known fact or interesting piece of GC&SU sports history, e-mail it to the Colonnade at colonnade@mail.gcsu.edu.

I’m really excited about the new college football season. Not many people know it, but to couteract the controversy last year over the BCS (Bowl Championship Series), the NCAA has come up with more creative schedules and made it easier to determine the difficulty of the schedules. Some of the new schedules have re-kindled some old feuds that were starting to die out. Georgia Tech and Auburn come to mind furst. These two rivals haven’t faced each other since 1989, but their feud spans all the way back to the early 1900′s.

Next week, I will also start a bi-weekly series of quick profiles of the new student athletes of every GC&SU sport. Next week will be a profile of the new cross country runners.

I’d just like to say that I’ve really enjoyed spending time with the cross country teams this week. Judging from the way that act around each other and what Head Coach Joseph Samprone and the runners said when they were interviewed, it seems that the teams really get along well. It’s a great group of people coming together for a common goal. I wish them all the luck in the 2002 season.
