Bobcat Classic tees off Monday; first time playing at Harbor Club
The tenth annual Bobcat Classic is scheduled to be held September 9th at the Harbor Club in Greensboro, Ga. Georgia College & State University Athletic Director Stan Aldridge said that the Classic is more than just fun and games at a golf course.
“The purpose is to raise money for scholarships, for athletes with outstanding academic credentials,” Aldridge said. “It’s to better upgrade the academic standards of our athletes who are coming here to play for us.”
All student-athletes who wish to benefit from the Bobcat Classic scholarships must have a SAT score of 1100 or better, or a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher.
Last year’s Bobcat Classic raised over $14,000 for scholarships for GC&SU student-athletes. However, the athletic department is relying on a previously un-tapped source for funding.
“We’ve really concentrated on trying to get corporate sponsors,” said Aldridge. “We have corporate sponsors this year that will pay us approximately $34,500, and will have to pay some expenses out of that we’ll have earned considerably more [through corporate sponsors] than we’ve ever had on our golf tournament.”
The Harbor Club course was chosen for this year’s Bobcat Classic. The course was selected due mainly to the participation of the coporate sponsors.
“It’s just a real good quality golf course,” said Aldridge. “Our corporate sponsors in particular are paying a lot of money, and they like to play on a nice course. It’s among the best in the nation, so it’s a real good opportunity to have a chance to play there, and to have [the Classic] on a course of that quality.”
