Elections for Student Government Association (SGA) for the positions of president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer were held Wednesday and Thursday in front of Parks Hall.
J.W. Mozley and Keith Woodruff ran for president of SGA. Erin Morris and Adam Nisbit ran for vice-president. Leah Blasingame is an incumbent officer, and no one ran against her in this election. There were four people who ran for treasurer: Coletha Cox, Will Hatcher, Darren Hoag and LaToya Plunkette.
According to Mr. Clifton Wilkinson, instructor of Government and Sociology, students get involved with SGA for many reasons.
“Some say it is for the experience and others to assist in various causes that they are interested in,” Wilkinson said. “For students, it provides a great way of obtaining leadership experience. It allows students to see how government really works.”
Wilkinson said that SGA is important on our campus.
“SGA does important things and will work on important issues involving students,” Wilkinson said. “This year, SGA worked on passing legislation to help obtain a parking deck. They allocate all student activity funds of over $500,000 per year.”
Students exercised their voting power for the SGA elections.
“I feel that the students elected represent our thoughts and beliefs on certain topics,” junior Lisa Federico said. “We have a choice to choose who we want to represent our student body.”
Students running for SGA offices were busy Wednesday and Thursday campaigning around campus and encouraging students to vote.
“I was walking on front campus, and I saw my friend who’s running for president,” junior Carlos Aguilera said. “He asked me if I’d voted yet. I said no, and I came over here.”
Stay tuned for the election results in next week’s edition!
