GC&SU’s intramural sports season is winding to a close with only a few sports still in progress.
Tennis is in its quarterfinals. Outdoor volleyball started Tuesday, April 9 for the men and Wednesday, April 10 for the women. The softball challenge will take place Sunday, April 7. The deadlines to enter have already passed for both of these sports.
Kickball is the only sport still open to join, but rosters are due Friday, April 12. It will be a two-man scramble at Little Fishing Creek at a cost of $19.80 per person. Play will begin at 2 p.m. starting April 16, and teams can be coed or same sex.
Sean Frantom, graduate assisstant for Student Activities, said they were pleased with this year’s participation.
“Overall, this was a very good year,” he said. “Enrollment was up across the board. We added two new sports this year, floor hockey and kickball. We also added a homerun derby/all-star game for softball, a slam dunk competition for basketball, and sports trivia.”
The homerun derby/all-star game will be held at Walter B. Williams Park on Thursday, April 18. The 22 teams are divided into two leagues – the American League and the National League. Each team will select one person to compete in the homerun derby. If some teams do not have homerun hitters, then some of the higher seeded teams may select more than one player. The top two teams in each league will place two players each on the all-star team. At 8 p.m. there will be a game between the fraternities, and at 9:30 p.m. the all-star game begins.
The top two men’s and top two women’s teams will advance to the state finals in Gainesville.
“Our teams that are going to represent us at the state finals are very good,” said Frantom. “I expect them to at least get to finals or win the championship.”
He added, “We would like to thank the Baldwin County recreation department for allowing the use of Walter B. Williams park for the first time ever at night.”
Fall intramural sports this year included ultimate frisbee, sand volleyball, indoor volleyball, flag football, table tennis, racquetball, bowling, floor hockey, 9-ball billiards and sports trivia. Spring sports were basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, college bowl trivia, sand volleyball, a golf tournament, softball challenge and kickball.
